Season Review

Season 2009/2010 was an unusual one of both highs and lows, but mainly highs. At the commencement of the last home and away match, the top two sides had lost 3 matches each (but won one outright) and the 3rd to 5th sides had only lost 2 matches but been involved in a draw.

We were 5th and playing the top side. Thanks largely to batting contributions from Beard, Callanan, Croft and Ian Rayner and 5 wicket hauls by both Meilak and Smith, we were able to win that game and finish the season third (equal second).
In the semi final against ultimate premier Elgar Park’s first eleven, we started well with the bat but a middle order collapse saw us only make 103 (in amongst the golf ball sized hail which washed out the second half of the first day’s play).
We gave them a fright at 3/3 (and it should have been 4/14 if an umpiring decision went our way), but Elgar Park withstood the pressure and ran out deserving winners.

During the season, we used 29 different players (last year 32) so to make the finals was a really good joint club effort. Most pleasing was that in my captain’s round by round 3-2-1 voting 19 different players polled at least one vote during the 11 home and away rounds. Meilak polled 13 votes followed by Ian Rayner and Alex Roberts on 6 and Toby Gould on 5.
Team highlights for the season included:

• Winning the round 1 match after being 3/30 batting first
• Winning the round 2 game after losing 7/23 chasing 141 (after being 0/62)
• The “oil on the pitch” round 5 match against Elgar Park which resulted in the second day’s play being abandoned
• The “must win” victory against top side Templestowe in Round 10 which saw us bowl them out for 167 (Meilak 4/62 from 36 consecutive overs) and us pass them after being 7/122

The batting highlights included:

• 139 by Beard which helped us chase down our round 3 target
• 101 not out by Warren Roberts which helped us chase down our round 6 target
• 94 by Ian Rayner which helped us chase down our round 4 target
• 87 by Paul Callanan which set up a large, ultimately winning score in round 8

The bowling highlights included:

• Five wicket hauls by Mohammed (round 3), Chandra (round 7) and Smith and Meilak in round 11
• Two marathon spells by Meilak in rounds 10 and 11 and one by Alex Roberts in round 9
• Smith’s form in the four games he played for us at the end of the season
• The consistent performances of Toby Gould (until injury and unavailability curtailed his season) and Alex Roberts.
Young Michael Jenkin did an admirable job behind the stumps during the season.

A big thank you to the Committee of this great community club for giving me the opportunity to play with my son and captain a great bunch of guys, and for running the club so well. Thank you also to coach Brad Byrnes for his tireless leadership and drive. Thank you also to the other captains (Jay and Thommo) and to Steve and Michael who all always had the club’s best interests as their number one priority at the selection table, and also to Michael Dwyer for his assistance during the season.

Finally on behalf of the players thank you to:

• the ladies for all they do around the club including afternoon teas, catering, canteen, etc
• the Thursday night chefs
• the wives/girlfriends/families of the players for letting us play the game we love.
