PRESIDENTS REPORT
Dear all,
The coming cricket season is nearly upon us and preparation for the year is well underway.
The committee have been busy with many issues including the condition of the grounds, the purchase of new equipment, upgrade of the club rooms and reorganising some of the committee positions.
Unfortunately after upgrading our financial system and overseeing a resurgence in club finances our Treasurer Geoff?Stephens has had to stand down. We thank you Fish for your great contribution and wish our new Treasurer Peter Turnley all the best in keeping spending under control.
People who haven’t been in the clubrooms for some time will notice a huge improvement in facilities and comfort. Thank you to Mark Paterson for his efforts in bringing these changes about.
The condition of the grounds has been of much concern to the club and we have tried to bring about the best result for our players both Junior and Senior. We could have stood back and done nothing which would have left the bottom ground in a state where player’s welfare would have been at risk. However with a joint venture between the cricket and footy clubs, a massive working bee was organised and the ground was totally re sod with couch grass.
No guarantees that this will work without rain but the alternative of doing nothing would have meant the council would most likely have closed the ground down.
Thank you to the mass of volunteers who performed beyond the call to help out. Your efforts were certainly appreciated.
Not so some of our players who must have thought if I don't turn, some one else will.
If we expect to be a top club in this association then we need to show that we are prepared to put in some sacrifice and effort to allow us to improve. I was totally embarrassed to see parents and kids working their butts off and barely a player in sight. Let's hope this apathy is not seen on the field this year.
On the cricket side of things the club has not gone out and recruited players, but is relying on?the natural improvement of a number of ex juniors to push us up the ladder. We feel by retaining nearly all of last year’s list and the inclusion of some very talented juniors from last year, we are in a position to rise up the ladder.
A record number of Juniors will represent BCC this year. We wish you well and hope your experience will make you want to be a part of our club for years to come. Above all enjoy yourself
So welcome to the 2009/2010 season. We arrive with great expectation, time will tell our fate. We wish Brad Byrnes and the other Captains the best of luck this season and hope we have First eleven successes to push Blackburn back up to the position of power it once held.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the season launch on Thursday.
Regards – Tom
SEASON LAUNCH
Thursday 1st October (next week)
As always we invite all of our members to celebrate the beginning of our season with our season launch to be held next Thursday at the club beginning at 6.30pm.
The past launches have proved to be a huge success, brining together everyone from our up and coming youngsters, senior players, wives, girlfriends, family and our life members.
Kicking the season off by uniting the Blackburn family certainly provides a great vibe amongst the many generations that have, and still are, proud to be part of Blackburn.
Feedback from previous years has been extremely positive, and this season, with many younger players stepping up, the support and encouragement shown to them during this night holds them in good stead for a prosperous and well overdue year of success for our Club
While the boys are on the track finishing their last official training session before the first ball is bowled on Saturday, members can enjoy a drink and finger food, followed by the announcement of captains and the teams for the first round. A great opportunity to catch up with everyone.
There is no requirement to rsvp, everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you on the night.
Dear Life Members,
Normally I would write an individual letter inviting you along to this night, however due to unforeseen circumstances this was not possible, as time did not permit. My apologies, however I know that, as in the past, your presence will be as strong as always – look forwarding to seeing you all again – Lisa Robertson
COACHE’S CORNER
It has been really pleasing to have a lot of different faces and the improvement has been evident in the commitment from the boys who have been constantly attending over the pre season, it has been extremely positive.
The club also welcomes new player Chris Morrow, and his wife Caroline. We extend a warm welcome to them both, and wish them all the best for the new arrival into their family who is due to be born in approximately 8 weeks. We look forward to meeting you both, we are sure you will enjoy being part of the Blackburn family.
We also welcome back Shane Thompson to Blackburn, after a short stint with Blackburn North. Shane has a passion for our club and we are thrilled that he and wife Andrea are returning – all the best for a great year Shane.
SENIOR TRAINING
With indoor training now finished outdoor training will be held Tuesday and Thursday at Blackburn beginning next week beginning at 4.30pm until daylight saving starts when it will start at 5.30pm.
A training session has been scheduled to commence at 9.00am on Grand Final day (this Saturday) at the Club – please ensure you come along to make the most of our opportunity to get an extra session in before our season campaign begins.
Paul Meilak will be available towards the end of training for those players wishing to pay their fees. Remember, a free pair of shorts will be ready for you when they arrive (first week October) for those who pay before the first round.
JUNIOR SECTION
The junior section has again expanded for the 2009/10 season with a total of 13 teams being fielded! Whilst there are still some places left in all age groups I expect these to be snapped up in the coming weeks over the preseason. Once again a big thanks to both Alan Dowland and Stuart Cran for coordinating a smooth registration. Also, full credit to Reggie Kunst for his work with the MILO cricket program in 2008/09….some 20 MILO kids have graduated into the under 10 program this season!
The club is also extremely grateful to all those parents and senior cricketers that are volunteering their time to coach and manage sides. Thanks for putting your hand up to make the season happen.
Preseason training for under 12 to 16s is now under way and I urge all players to attend training and get a flying start to round 1. The first week night training sessions are scheduled for the week commencing October 5th for round 1 on Saturday October 10th.
The under 10 cricket program will be starting up in late October and there are still teams that need coaches and managers. If you are interested in assisting with Friday night under 10 cricket please contact me ASAP.
Good luck to all players over the preseason and in the first rounds of the 2009/10 season. Please keep on checking your e-mails for regular updates.

CLUBS ARE ONLY AS SUCCESSFUL AS THE PEOPLE WHO ARE PART OF THEM
A brief reminder to us all about our Club
As Eddie Lee alluded to earlier, our junior contingent goes from strength to strength. This is no accident; it is through long term planning, management and dedication from numerous people over many years, beginning with our successful Milo Program.
Blackburn CC has provided for our community to participate in cricket for over 100 years, players ranging in ages from 5 to over 55, and many life members and supporters exceeding these years.
A correlation between participation in team sport and good mental health and resilience has been consistently shown through research. By providing a positive environment for our children and adults to learn physical, mental and social of aspects of our sport has been paramount to our longevity.
This philosophy is also extended off-field by nurturing a friendly and welcoming environment for children, parents, senior players, volunteers and supporters which we believe strengthens our "community bond".
Being successful on the field is our main goal, especially for our senior teams. Just as important to our club is that our juniors enjoy their experience at Blackburn, learn through the excellent coaching and mentoring we provide, and of course celebrate a win. We are particularly proud of our junior program.
Our club is well regarded within the Association as a well administered club. We rely heavily on the input of many volunteers each week to support our kids and seniors.
Rostering systems are part of any club, something that without we would not be able to operate. For many of us it is almost a year round commitment, with a small break over the winter months – we do it because we love it and know the benefits outweigh the work involved.
This season we are extremely keen to increase our level of volunteers to assist with some basic tasks, most of which we all take for granted at times. This is really important to ensure the club remains successful for the current and future generations.
Please give your consideration to offering some time (maybe ½, 1 or 2 hours even once a week, a fortnight or even once a month – it all helps).
If you can assist with juniors in any way, Eddie Lee would be happy to discuss a task that you could assist with. Help during training sessions is just as important as match day.
Milo In-2-Cricket is a program that also continues to go from strength to strength. There are so many little things parents can assist with on the night (Friday’s), please contact Regan Kunst, he would love to have your help. Ron Slight has kindly offered to assist Regan this season also, well done Ron – a young guy who can see the time we invest with these young boys and girls will see our junior program continue for many, many years.
Likewise, the seniors also need more volunteers, especially with the running of the canteen. Ideally each week I would like to have a roster where there are 2 x 3 hour shifts. To have 8 people put their hand up would mean your commitment may only be once a month. Please contact Lisa Robertson if you can help.
Most of us walk into the rooms at afternoon tea, it all laid out nicely for players to enjoy, and when the game is finished the rooms are clean, vacuumed and in great shape. Nobody gets paid to do any of these tasks – they magically happen.
Match days for both juniors and seniors takes preparation, please put your hand up, there are so many medial tasks that need to be done, most of them take little time, however make a huge difference.
A cleaning roster for senior players has already been posted on the website, so please have a look to see when your team is scheduled to turn up. A strong team has no weak links, so please help each other out.

Blackburn Cricket Club is very proud to announce that Mike Dwyer has been awarded the very honoured and bestowed LIFE MEMBERSHIP of the Association.
A well deserved recognition of the contribution Mike has given to both our Club and the BHRDCA over many, many years.
This award is yet another acknowledgment of Mike’s outstanding contribution to the cricket community. Congratulations Mike.
UPDATING SENIOR PLAYERS DETAILS

We will happily continue to send our members who don’t have access to a computer the information via the post so that everyone keeps updated with the happenings at Blackburn.
Perhaps you have a new address, email or phone number?

VETERANS TEAM
(Over 40’s)– OUR FIRST YEAR
WE NEED TO SEEK YOUR GENUINE INTEREST ASAP
To ensure our up and coming younger players get optimum opportunity to play in a 2 day competition and to further introduce them to higher levels of cricket the committee made a decision not to field a 1 day side this season. We believe this supports our vision of providing and nurturing our youth.
In it’s place we have entered a team in the Veterans Competition in the C Grade (a standard equivalent between the Open Age B2- C grade). Veterans teams play every SECOND Sunday (plenty of time to recover!)
WHO CAN PLAY (extracted from BHRDCA website)
To support the expansion of the competition, each team will be entitled to play 1 player in the 38-39 (Over 40 Comp) age group. (Note: Clubs in their first year (like us) in the Competition may play two (2) players in these age groups to assist them in building their player list). The Grade Co-ordinator shall have final ruling on a players eligibility.
CAN WE DO IT
Veteran’s cricket is becoming extremely popular within the Association, both from a family social atmosphere and the spirit in which it played. We are really keen for Blackburn to field a side this season. If we cannot get the numbers will unfortunately have to notify the Association and withdraw the team within the next 2 weeks.
It is a proven fact from many other clubs that for this to be viable we need a core group of about 20 players. This allows us to be able to field a team each week, while taking into account rotating players to suit other commitments they may have, while at the same time being able to field a competitive side.
WE NEED TO GET A GENUINE COMMITMENT WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK TO ASCERTAIN ITS VIABILITY. IF WE GET 20 -25 PLAYERS INTERESTED, EVEN IF THEY CAN ONLY PLAY A FEW GAMES FOR THE SEASON WE CAN DO THIS.
PLEASE EMAIL TOM CULLEN ASAP TO ADVISE YOUR COMMITMENT.
This will provide our club with an entertaining and family friendly Sunday afternoon, twice a month. We think we can do it, please help us achieve it. The BHRDCA website has rules posted for those who want more details. And don’t worry guys, we have plenty of ice packs and a new first aid kit on hand!!!!!!!
BLACKBURN CRICKET CLUB
MILO-IN-2 CRICKET REBEL VOUCHER COMPETITION
As we did with our Under 10, 12, 14 and 16 players, we will be giving one lucky registered Milo-In-2-Cricket participant the chance to win a $100 Rebel Sports Voucher to have a cricket shopping spree – whatever they want. This is a club initiative and Milo In-2-Cricket has no involvement, however we are sure they would be pleased with our commitment to enhancing our youth’s knowledge in a fun way.
Entries will be posted/emailed out closer to Milo beginning and details on how to enter will be within the entry form. All you have to do is read the information and answer some basic questions about healthy eating for sports, injury prevention and sportsmanship. You may like to ask for some help from a parent or an older brother or sister. Good luck boys and girls.
Thank you to all the juniors who entered the competition 6 weeks ago, we had a flood of entries. It is great to be able to give back to the kids some sort of reward for their efforts. The winners (as publicised on the website) were:-
Under 16 – Rithvik Pendyala Under 14 – Matt Balon
Under 12 – Angus McNamara Under 10 – Brant Hubber
Every entrant from our Under 10-16’s will receive a letter (with a small consolation prize offer) and these will be posted today (a little later than I anticipated) so you will receive it in he mail either Friday or Monday. Lisa Robertson

BLACKBURN FOOTBALL CLUB – CONGRATULATIONS ON A SUCCESSFUL YEAR
Blackburn enjoyed an extremely pleasing season in the EFL’s1st Division. Finishing 5th on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, they beat Lilydale in the first round of the finals then, in one of the biggest upsets of the year had a convincing win over Balwyn to play off in the Preliminary final v Vermont however fell short losing that game that by all accounts was a great contest. Croydon and Vermont played off in the Grand Final with Vermont taking out the Premiership. All three Blackburn teams were represented in the finals series, the 2nds and Colts
. Congratulations Blackburn on a great year.
