VALE GARY G.A FEENANE
21/07/1943 - 9/05/2009
As you are all aware, our dear friend,Gary Feenane, passed away on May 9th after a courages battle with cancer. Our thought, support and friendship will always remain with his wife Pat, a dear friend of the Blackburn family, and their daughters Linda and Kylie, and their son-in-law Neil.
Gary’s passion for Blackburn never wavered, he was exceptionally proud of his association with the Club. In turn we are extremely honoured to have enjoyed Gary’s cricket knowledge and loyal services for over 30 years.
PRESIDENTS REPORT
Tom Cullen
Welcome to our first edition of Blackchat for the season. The season is quickly approaching and before we know it we will be looking through the cupboard to find the old cricket bag and give the whites a wash. The first training session is only a few weeks away and we all will be raring to get stuck into it.
The Club has re-appointed Brad Byrnes as coach and is delighted to give him a second year at the helm. We intend to give him much more off field support this coming season and hope for much improvement from the younger members of the club.
We look like having some changes around the club this year with the introduction of a veterans eleven to play on alternate Sunday’s. Hopefully we can get enough support to get this side up and running.
The junior section of the club is going from strength to strength and already Eddie and Reggie are organising to potentially field more teams than last year. We look forward to seeing the Under 16 boys graduate to the seniors.
The renovations have been made to the social rooms and make a huge difference to the lighting and size of the clubrooms. Many thanks to Patto for organising and completing this project. Well done mate. On a sad note we have witnessed the sad passing of our great mate Gary Feenane. "Bags" was not only a great clubman, but a wealth of knowledge who will be sadly missed. I was fortunate to have Gary as a team manager and scorer during my years as coach and he certainly made my job a lot easier. We hosted a wake at the clubrooms in his honour and it was a privilege to have Pat and his two daughters Linda and Kylie here. They are more than welcome any time.
Let’s hope the coming season is the start of resurgence at the Blackburn Cricket Club and we regain our rightful spot at the top of the Macintosh Shield ladder.
Regards - Tom Cullen

YOUR COMMITTEE SEASON 2009/2010
We are delighted to advise of our committee positions for season 2009/2010.
A special thank you to Geoff Stephens, who after many years of service to the Club, at the end of last season decided to stand down from the Treasurer’s position.

JUNIOR TEAMS GROW AND GROW
SENIOR PLAYERS -THEY NEED YOUR HELP
Our junior numbers continue to grow, great news for the club, and testament to the ongoing work – both administratively and practically of Eddie Lee, Stuart Cran, our coaches, team managers, senior players and parents.
The philosophy of our junior program is simple; OPPORTUNITY, ENJOYMENT and PARTICIPATION.
As we write this newsletter, and with some assumptions being made on current numbers, we look at fielding the following teams next season (to be confirmed in August):-
5 x Under 10 teams
4 x Under 12 teams
3 x Under 14 teams
2 x Under 16 teams, plus
Our highly successful Milo in2cricket program
These kids are the Club’s future. Some Clubs struggle to set up and retain a successful junior program, we know it is a positive investment, one that will see these kids enjoy the benefits of playing sport in fun, family and friendly environment for many years.
We call on our senior players who have (or could make) the time to coach one of junior teams this season to contact Eddie Lee who will give you details and answer any questions you may have.
We will provide you with the Level 1 Coaching Course.
Eddie Lee has put a fantastic handbook together which outlines the Philosophy of Junior Cricket at Blackburn, including the guidelines for Coaches & Team Managers, Player and Parental involvement.
Whilst a roster will be made for each senior players to assist with Milo in2cricket and junior training (1-2 times per season), we really need you to have a think if you could commit to coaching a junior side this season.
Thank you to the following senior players who have already volunteered, Regan Kunst (Milo), Ian Rayner, Anthony Germanchev, Matt Yeo, Peter Bain, Cam Blake, Lachlan Head, Peter Turnely and Alex Beard, and to the parents of our juniors, Tony Gustin, Tony DePrue and Colin Gridley.
To the Team Managers who have volunteers for the upcoming season, thank you; Andrea Mallia, David Clayton, Chris Pollock, Alan Dowland (also assistant Registrar) Glen mahoney, Colin McKensie, Ian Walter, Mal Gibson and Stuart Cran (also Junior Registrar), and Scott Fulton, (Merchandise).
Please do not think that we have enough coaches or team managers, far from it. To sustain our junior teams (including Under 10’s) we need to enlist a lot more help, please give this strong consideration.
Please contact Eddie directly if you are able to make a contribution to our successful junior program in any way.
Tom Cullen & Lisa Robertson

Updating our list will assist the committee and captains when contacting our members.
If your details have not changed in the past year you do not need to update them.
If you need to update your details please email Peter Bain or call him on 0418 107 044.
WALLS COME TUMBLIN’ DOWN AT BCC
Wow, many of you will get a big surprise when you walk into the Clubrooms this season. A project that has been in the planning for some time has come to fruition.
The wall separating the upstairs viewing area has been demolished, opening up the rooms for a fresh, light filled "open" feeling. Both the Cricket and Football clubs will certainly reap the benefits of this renovation.
There were many people in the Football Club who worked tirelessly on this project also, and we thank them collectively for their vital contribution.
The Cricket Club welcomes John Schneider to the role of Sporting Club President, and we look forward to supporting John in his role. John takes over from Mark Paterson, who has done a wonderful job at the helm for many years.
"OFF SEASON" HAPPENINGS
A couple of really pleasing things took place over the past few months that have got our season off to a flying start:-
In May, our Club entered the Leader Newspaper’s "Grass Roots Gold" competition where Victorian sports clubs were asked to write, in 100 words why they needed sports equipment.
We were delighted that our Club won 1 of the 30 $1000 Rebel Sports Credit Accounts for our Junior teams. A reporter from the Whitehorse Leader visited our Club and took a photo and did a brief article which was printed in the newspaper. If you missed it, check out our website.
On June 27th, we were lucky again in securing a day at Bunnings Nunawading to conduct the Sausage Sizzle from 8am – 4.30pm. Thank you to all involved in making this day such a success, with over $1300 being raised for your Club.
Special mention and thank you to Scott and Leonie Chamberlain (Kerrimuir Quality Meats) for supplying the sausages at a great price. The shoppers loved them and it certainly helped to increase our profit.
Cricket Victoria offered grants of up to $500 for cricket clubs to assist them in improving the training and/or experience our many volunteers have. We were successful in our application for $380 for the following courses:-
2 x Safe Food Handling courses (Lisa Robertson and Peter Turnley will be undertaking these shortly)
2 x Basic First Aid courses (participants yet to be determined – ideally 1 representative from juniors and seniors, to ensure greater coverage throughout the club)
