Grand Final vs Heatherdale

Lachie Tie led us into our last game of the season as skipper. We hadn’t lost a game all season and we had no intentions of doing it now. Heatherdale’s only loss was to us early in the year when we chased down their total of 7/192 and made 7/201. Lachie Tie won the toss and we went into bat on a fine but dewy morning.

Crack. Mitch dispatched the first ball of the innings to the boundary and we were away. Lachie Mallia was at the other end and was itching to face and played a superb innings of 34 before getting caught behind while trying to lift the run rate. At one point Lachie hit 3 boundaries in 4 balls as the score raced along before his dismissal at 1/54 in the 15th over. Mitch anchored the innings into the 25th over with his 27 retired. It was a great effort as he saw Kyle caught at slip for 5 (2/65) and then Lachie Tie caught behind for 10 (3/89) just after drinks.

Josh Sharman joined Mitch before he was retired to make way for Tom Walton. Tom (1) was the fourth batter to be caught behind . Josh tried to rekindle his superb semi final form but was caught behind for 14 not before hitting 2 boundaries leaving us at 5/104 in the 31st over.

Matty Pollock and Lachie McKenzie joined forces and the next wicket didn’t fall until we had made another 21 runs when Lachie was caught. James Dowland got off the mark with a top edge before Matty was caught and bowled on 11. James ended up making 14 when he was caught and we were 8/152 in the 42nd over.

Mukul top edged a catch when he was 1 and Karl was our 5th batter to be caught by the keeper for a duck. Gus was stranded on 1 with the team score on 154 all out in the last over. Heatherdale gave us 21 extras which helped raise our score. Was 154 enough ?

Day Two

Howzat, first ball the dangerous Toole walking back to the pavilion after holing out to Lachie Mallia at cover from Mukul. What a great start! James Dowland steamed in from the other end and bowled with great accuracy. Between the two opening bowlers the opposition were 1/6.

Matty Pollock and Josh Sharman then took the ball with a caught behind appeal turned down off Josh. Both bowlers continued to keep the run rate in check with the score 1/21 from 8 overs.

Tom Walton and Lachie Mc Kenzie were given their chance to keep the pressure on with Lachie only conceding 4 runs from his two overs. Tom tried valiantly and then came around the wicket for some better deliveries helping to keep Heatherdale to 1/43.

Lachie Tie and Gus Macleod came on to bowl with Josh taking catch of the season while on the run at backward square to dismiss Toovey for 27.Heatherdale were now 2/46 in the 13th over. Lachie ended up with 1/4from his first spell while Gus bowled his spinners beautifully. Lachie Mallia and Mitch Mahoney joined up again this time as bowlers . Both bowled well and only conceded 18 runs from their four overs.

Karl DePreu came to the crease for his first spell with James Dowland returning the favour to Lucas Grierson(11) by taking a catch at short mid wicket. Heatherdale went to drinks at 3/79 with the match very evenly poised. Kyle was keeping well but the skipper decided to give the gloves to Lachie Mallia for the last 22 overs. We had concede 14 extras and needed to tighten the bowling and fielding by 8.3 % to keep in accordance with Alan Dowland’s spreadsheet that put the Lewis-Duckworth system to shame.

Mukul and James continued to bowl in tandem with both continuing their miserly form. Matt tried valiantly in his second spell. Josh came back and quickly ruined the alignment of the stumps with our only bowled wicket to have the opposition at 4/118 in the 31st over. The tension was building in the parents. Lachie McKenzie really put the brakes on with a maiden and only gave away 10 overs from his second spell of 3 overs.

Mukul and James came back on but the batters had started to swing the willow and their confidence rose as quick as the score. By the time the 40th over came around, we were looking at our first loss of the season and we didn’t have to wait for the 41st over for it to happen.

It was a fantastic team effort but we were beaten by a better side on the day ( or two days). Everyone played their part and should be proud of their efforts. Next season is only a footy season away, so lets not put our kit too deep into the closet.
